The main thing I have learned about copyright is that it is very
complex. There are several rules that one must abide by, in order to use the
work of someone else. The owner of the work you are requesting to use will have
different copyright agreements that you must look into, prior to using their
work. Prior to reading the assigned articles, the only thing I knew about
copyright was that you could use another person’s work, as long as you properly
cite it. However, there are restrictions that each owner requests, prior to
their work being shared.
The most important thing to teach your students in regards to copyright
is to always check what the owner’s copyright agreements are, prior to using
their work. You cannot just assume that if you properly cite someone else’s
work, you are not breaking any copyright laws. You very well could be depending
on how you are using that owner’s work. If at any time a student is questioning
whether or not they are abiding by an owner’s copyright agreements, they can
seek help from their teacher or school librarian.
